I had implants with Dr Musa ten years ago. It was the best thing I've ever done. They are brilliant. My sight both near and distant was very poor but since the op I've had no glasses no lenses and my sight has been super. It remains really good to this day. Thank you Dr Musa. Brilliant consultations and treatment for glaucoma since.

I can highly recommend the Eye Doctor Clinic, and I am so pleased I went there. Dr Musa, Gemma and Jess are lovely. They are very knowledgeable and were able to answer all my questions. My vision following surgery is great, and not having to wear glasses is fantastic.

What is Ectropion Surgery?

Ectropion develops when the lower eyelid droops or turns outward from the eye, often due to age-related muscle relaxation, prior trauma, or facial nerve issues. When the eyelid no longer sits flat against the eye, it exposes the delicate inner surface, leading to dryness, irritation, redness, and excessive watering.

Ectropion surgery is a delicate medical procedure designed to tighten the eyelid and gently return it to its proper position against the eye. In simple terms, our surgeon carefully adjusts the muscles and tendons of the lower lid so it once again forms a healthy seal with the eye's surface.

Why choose Ectropion surgery?

Left untreated, ectropion can lead to long-term discomfort and even permanent damage to the cornea. You may choose ectropion surgery if you are facing:

Constant watering or tearing of the eye
A gritty, sore or irritated feeling that does not settle
Redness and sensitivity around the eyelid
Difficulty closing the eye properly, especially at night
Repeated eye infections or inflammation
Frustrating side effects from long-term reliance on lubricating drops

Dr Musa will assess your eyelid, related symptoms and surrounding tissue health to confirm if surgery is the safest path forward for you.

How Does Ectropion Surgery Work?

Ectropion surgery is a highly advanced technique that involves restoring the proper position of your lower eyelid by tightening the muscles and tendons. Once we administer a local anaesthetic to numb your eye and the surrounding areas for your comfort, our specialist creates a minute incision at the lateral edge of your eyelid.

Then, a small amount of the excess skin is removed and repositioned. The entire procedure takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes per eye, depending on the approach chosen. Our expert's specific approach will ensure proper eyelid positioning and protect your delicate eyes.

Frequently Asked Questions

It typically develops as the muscles and tendons around the eye relax with age, though it can also be caused by scarring or nerve issues.

Not at all. We gently numb your eye with a local anaesthetic to ensure you are entirely comfortable and pain-free throughout the procedure.

Eye drops and ointments can temporarily relieve irritation, but surgery is the definitive way to correct the eyelid's position and protect the eye.

While you can return to desk work in just a few days, full stability and the fading of any minor surgical marks can take several weeks.

Most patients return to desk work within 1-3 days. Strenuous activity and physically demanding jobs may require 2-4 weeks. Your consultant will confirm exactly when you are ready to resume your usual routine.
