Overview

Understanding Dry Eye

Dry eye is one of the most common eye conditions, causing persistent discomfort, blurred vision, and surface damage if left untreated. At the Eye Doctor Clinic, treatment is tailored to the type and severity of your dry eye — from simple lubrication support through to specialist procedures.

Condition

What Is Dry Eye?

Dry eye occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears, or when the quality of tears is insufficient to keep the ocular surface properly lubricated. There are two main types:

Aqueous-Deficient Dry Eye

The tear glands do not produce enough fluid. Common causes include ageing, autoimmune conditions such as Sjogren's Syndrome, and postoperative dryness after LASIK, LASEK, or cataract surgery.

Evaporative Dry Eye

Tears evaporate too quickly, usually due to meibomian gland dysfunction, blepharitis, or environmental factors.

Many patients have a combination of both types, and accurate diagnosis is essential to guide the right treatment.

Treatment Options

Dry Eye Treatments at the Eye Doctor Clinic

Punctal Plugs

Punctal plugs are small, biocompatible devices placed into the tear drainage ducts (puncta) to help the eyes retain more natural tears. By blocking some or all of the drainage pathway, more tears remain on the surface of the eye. This improves lubrication and reduces burning, stinging, and gritty sensations. The procedure is quick and painless — plugs are placed using a micro-applicator with no cutting, stitches, or injections. Temporary plugs dissolve over weeks; silicone plugs remain until removed or replaced.

Lubricating Eye Drops

Artificial tears and lubricating drops are often the first line of treatment for mild to moderate dry eye. At the Eye Doctor Clinic, the appropriate formulation is recommended based on your tear film type and severity of symptoms — preservative-free options are preferred for frequent use.

Lid Hygiene and Warm Compresses

For evaporative dry eye caused by meibomian gland dysfunction or blepharitis, a structured lid hygiene routine and warm compress therapy can significantly improve tear quality by unblocking the meibomian glands and stabilising the lipid layer of the tear film.

Advanced Therapies

For patients who do not respond adequately to first-line treatments, further options may include BlephEx, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy, or anti-inflammatory treatment. Your consultant will advise on the most appropriate combination based on your clinical assessment.

Am I Suitable?

Is Dry Eye Treatment Right for You?

Punctal plugs may be suitable if you have:

  • Aqueous-deficient dry eye
  • Dry eye related to Sjogren’s Syndrome or autoimmune conditions
  • Post-surgical dryness after LASIK, LASEK, or cataract surgery
  • Persistent symptoms despite regular lubricating drops
  • Damage to the ocular surface from chronic dryness
  • Reflex watering caused by underlying dryness
Your Visit

What to Expect at the Eye Doctor Clinic

Your first appointment will include a detailed assessment of your tear film, eyelid margins, and ocular surface. This allows the consultant to identify the type and cause of your dry eye and recommend the most targeted treatment.

Punctal plug insertion is carried out in clinic and takes only a few minutes. Most patients feel mild awareness of the plug initially but adapt quickly. Improvement in comfort can be noticeable within hours to days. Follow-up checks confirm correct plug positioning and tear-film stability.

Aftercare

Recovery and Aftercare

No recovery time is needed after punctal plug insertion
Mild awareness of the plug for 24–48 hours is normal
Avoid rubbing the eyes
Use any prescribed drops as directed
Return for follow-up to ensure continued comfort and correct placement
Most plugs remain securely in place; some may dislodge and can easily be replaced
Early Intervention

Act Early to Protect Your Eyes

Untreated dry eye can cause damage to the ocular surface over time, leading to corneal scarring and reduced vision. Early use of appropriate treatment — including punctal plugs where indicated — helps protect the cornea and prevents chronic irritation. Seeking specialist advice early leads to better long-term outcomes.
